We held a 1-day workshop for six 10th grade students from a local school to investigate what kind of games lower secondary school students enjoy, which elements that work well in a game for learning programming, and get ideas for a game\u00a0 concept. During the first half of the workshop the students played two different\u00a0 existing off-the-shelf programming games, <a href=\"https:\/\/grasshopper.codes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grasshopper<\/a> by Google and <a href=\"https:\/\/codecombat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CodeCombat<\/a>. Their thoughts and impressions were captured through a focus group after playing.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-644 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/teseolab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_3636-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teseolab.idi.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_3636-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/teseolab.idi.ntnu.no\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_3636.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"\">In the other half of the workshop we held a co-design session based on the Triadic Game Design Approach. <\/span><span class=\"\">It consisted of four phases, where the students worked in groups in order to come up with game concepts by following the instructions for each phase. The day turned out to be successful, and the findings will help us as we proceed with our specialization project and master thesis, where the eventual goal is to design a programming game for lower secondary school.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning programming with a game?
