Today I attended the first IT3010 Students Symposium, the closing event of IT3010, Research-based Innovation Methodologies in Computer and Information Science. The course IT3010 is coordinated by Babak Farshchian and Elena Parmiggiani (in the photo) who have really gone an extra mile to create an engaging experience leading to excellent learning outcomes. The main objective of the course is to give students knowledge of research methods and develop skills that will be required for their master.
In the course students select a problem and research on it rigorously adopting an appropriate research method. The research is then presented in a paper. Students have also taken the responsibility to peer review the articles to be presented at the symposium. It was an inspiring day, with many interesting presentations including investigations of privacy issues, serious games, self-driving vehicles, sharing platforms,…topics that students found interesting and worth investigating. For sure the skills acquired in this course will be useful to students not only for their master, but also in their future working place.
This symposium was an excellent example of how innovative teaching methods can improve the learning experience. I hope that Excited will be able to create the context for more courses like this. Congratulations to all the students and kudos to Elena and Babak!
